On Wednesday morning the Philadelphia Union announced that they acquired Brazilian striker Matheus "Davó" Alvarenga de Oliveira on loan from first division team Sport Club Corinthians Paulista. The 21-year-old will be added to the Union's active roster immediately and will fill an international roster slot. Davó will be on loan with the squad for the remainder of the year as Philadelphia will have a club option to buy at that time.
This season Davó has been on loan with Guarani FC in the Série B league as he has scored five goals and recorded four assists in 44 appearances and 41 starts. He tallied his first multi-point game for the team when he notched a goal and added an assist in a 5-2 victory over Operário-PR and he had another multi-point game with a goal and assist in the team's 4-1 win on July 21.
Also this past year, Davó competed in Campeonato Paulista Série A1 which is a tournament consisting of 16-clubs in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the seven matches in that regional championship league, the striker scored one goal and contributed two assists which aided the team in earning a spot in the quarterfinals where they lost 4-3 in penalties. Nonetheless, it was a great run for his side Guarani FC and certainly confidence-boosting for the young forward.
"We're excited to welcome Matheus to the Philadelphia Union and add a versatile young attacker to our roster," said Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner. "We have looked for a technically advanced striker like Matheus who can play underneath his partner and link defense to attack. We look forward to getting him quickly integrated into our system."
Prior to his loan to Guarani FC, Davó competed for Corinthians in Serie A where he made four appearances and scored twice including a game-winner in the team's 1-0 win over Sport Club International. Hopefully, this signing adds depth and a true goal scorer that the Union can rely on coming off the bench and making his impact known. Davó is already with the team in Mexico City and will be available for selection in the 23 man squad for the big Concacaf matchup.
This signing comes with some speculation though as he will be the third striker the team signed coming from a second division club. In past seasons the Union acquired Jay Simpson from the British second division and Andrew Wooten from Germany's second division. Fans and media alike may be weary by this signing but it certainly has some excitement surrounding it too. Only time will tell for Davó's impact, but here's hoping that the youngster can bag lots of goals and potentially become the team's top scorer.
As for the 2021 Concacaf Scotiabank Champions League, Jim Curtin and Alejandro Bedoya spoke to the media today ahead of tomorrow night's highly anticipated matchup against Club America. The Union will face Mexican powerhouse Club America on Thursday night in the first leg of the semifinals at 10:00 p.m. EST on FS1 and TUDN. "I think this is kind of what dreams are made out of," said captain midfielder Alejandro Bedoya. "This is a big opportunity for every player for our club for the league, you know, representing the League here as the only MLS team left in a competition."
"A huge opportunity for all of us," added Bedoya. "I think the bigger picture here is to just go out there and give it all you got. Give it your best, then as long as you can come off the field saying that you gave it all I think that's what matters here and when I think we do give it our all and play together as a team, we can get a great result not just at home, but throughout the series and hopefully make it to the final."
Per Philadelphia Union Communications' Amanda Young Curtis and Erica Scheer, "Forward Kacper Przybylko has scored five goals thus far in the tournament, the most of any player in the tournament, that has him at the top of the Golden Boot race with three matches remaining. Przybylko scored in each of the Union's matches in CCL play and added an assist in the road leg at Atlanta United FC. Goalkeeper Andre Blake has kept three clean sheets, allowing only one goal in four matches."
The Union will face a top tier Liga MX club in their first leg on the road in Mexico City at the historic Estadio Azteca this Thursday before they return home to Subaru Park for the second leg on September 15. Be prepared for a scrappy and feisty match between two talented squads at one of the most well-known stadiums in the world come tomorrow night.
"These trips are so valuable," said manager Jim Curtin. "To play in international competitions is a real dream of the Philadelphia Union and we are here now, we're probably the biggest underdog when you look at the four teams that remain, but at the same time we have a very strong team, and we'll try to make it as difficult as possible for club America who's obviously very talented."
